FAQ
Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about Renovation to give you a picture of what things looks like week to week. Hopefully they will address issues important to you.
What kind of people make up Renovation? Renovation is a diverse community of people from various racial, ethic, socio-economic, educational and cultural backgrounds. Here we are all simply seeking to know and love God, live in community, and see our city transformed by serving it as we think Jesus would. Tim Keller, a pastor and thought leader says "[the] new human community that the Bible requires...doesn’t fit any culture but challenges them all at some point." This is the dynamic we pursue and seek to create, and this is true community. Practically speaking, this means some of us are just exploring faith in Jesus for the first time, while others have been in church our whole lives. Some of us come from wealth, while others have spent most of their lives making ends meet. But in this community none is greater than any other and everyone is welcome.
What if I'm not used to being a part of the church? You are the reason we started Renovation. We want to be a welcoming place for those who are curious about God but have never felt comfortable in church. We want Renovation to be a place where you can learn, apply and wrestle with who God is and what He desires for you. It's okay if you don't have it all figured out yet, none of us do. We like to say, "You don't have to clean yourself up first to come and meet Jesus." This is a "come as you are" environment.
What will the worship service be like? At Renovation we try and keep it simple. It's relaxed but passionate. We don't need to be flashy or put on big productions for people to meet God. We believe that Jesus is enough. No matter when you attend, we follow a basic pattern of meeting together that is traced back to the early Church. We teach from the Bible. We pray, we sing, and we respond by taking communion together. The goal through it all is to love God and know him better by making God's unchanging truth accessible and applicable without watering it down.
What should I wear? At Renovation, you're welcome to wear whatever you'd like. There is no set dress code, although most folks dress more casually. Just be you.
What time do you meet and how do I get there? We gather weekly on Sundays at 11 a.m. at the amphitheater of Martin Luther King Jr Middle School located at 545 Hill St. SE, Atlanta GA 30312. Check out this link to get directions.
What about my kids? Renovation loves kids! We believe that children are a blessing and should be taught about God in a fun learning environment and in a relevant way. Check out a brief description of what to expect in Renovation Kids.
Can I invite my friends? Absolutely, please do! We seek to be a welcoming environment for people who are curious about Christianity or who are seeking to belong to a community of believers.
How old is Renovation? Renovation had its first public worship service on January 16, 2011 in the amphitheater of Martin Luther King Jr Middle School. We launched that weekend in conjunction with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's birthday. Our first gathering celebrated Dr. King’s dream of racial, social and cultural reconciliation, which can only truly be realized in the Gospel. We launched with a team of 30 people and have settled in at a couple hundred. We continue to grow steadily.
What kind of church is Renovation? We are an interdenominational Christian church which, means we have a ton of people from all different backgrounds. It's pretty amazing how diverse we are, from Catholics and Baptists, to Presbyterians, Charismatic's, and Methodists. Jesus has done something wonderful here.
Who leads Renovation? Renovation is an elder-led, but member informed, church. Since we are a new church plant Pastor Leonce is our only on-site elder, but we have an external elder board made up of seven Pastor's who provide accountability to Pastor Leonce and oversight to the church. We also have a dynamic, and very diverse leadership team. Meet the team here.
How can I get involved? That's a really great question. Visit the Connection table on your way out at a weekend service, or jump into a City Group in your part of the city; City Groups are the life-blood of Renovation Church. You can also keep up to date on various mercy and justice efforts we are involved in throughout Atlanta, or join a ministry team and get involved there as well.
